A crowd of people, painted in a dramatic red and black palette, is depicted in a state of ecstatic celebration, with one prominently smiling and raising her hand.

Twisted50… Survey Results and AI Decisions

Thank you to everyone who got involved in the survey and questions around AI feedback.

I have come to some decisions which are…

  • Yes, we will move to reading four stories (and leaving feedback on those four) for future projects, opposed to the two we ask for now.
  • No, we will not open the site to the public. You must continue to sign up in order to read and review.
  • We will not integrate AI into Create50 projects in the foreseeable future.

Here’s my reasoning…

Story Read Number
It’s pretty clear that everyone loves getting their stories read. Having the number of feedbacks doubled would be super cool and around 80% of you agreed this is a good idea. I will also find a way to change the way the stories are displayed so that adding your own comments to the feedback does not impact where it is displayed. We may hit a technical limitation here but there are some options.

Letting The Public Read Stories
Technically they already can, they just need to sign up. But having the site fully open is next level. The community is pretty much split 50 / 50 on this. My decision to keep it closed is multifold. Several authors wrote privately saying they would not like it because their work would then have been online, disqualifying it from other projects. It also reduces risk and the chance of getting spammed. But most of all, I think it would diminish the community feeling we have, and that is important to so many of us.

AI and Feedback
I did a pretty deep dive into this over the past 24 hours (you can read about the real world results from one Twisted50 writer and AI HERE). I am certain that AI can offer insight into how to improve a story. It’s fast and effectively free. However, I think it flies in the face of what Create50 is really all about. Creatives interacting and helping each other. We write because we love it, not because we pathologically want it to be the very very very bestest. I do think that we could offer a cheat sheet or advice for any writer who does want to get feedback from ChatGPT. If they want to ask AI for help before submitting either first or final drafts, that is their choice, and I would support the choice of ANY artist to use any tools they choose, to enhance their work. AI is here and not going away. It’s just not a good fit for Create50.

So there it is…

Next time round, four reads, we will keep it private, and AI will not built into the process in any way. But if you want to ask AI for feedback, you can do that privately.

I hope we are all happy with these decisions. After all, Twisted50 and the Create50 community is a group effort.

Thanks for your patience and input.

Now we have a book to build!

  1. Good decisions I think and spot on regarding the AI. You only have to read our twisted little stories to realise we all like to be twisted in slightly different ways. That’s the entire fun of it.

  2. “I think it flies in the face of what Create50 is really all about. Creatives interacting and helping each other.”
This is a really thoughtful comment I think. Very well said Chris.

  3. That all makes good sense to me (though considering I’m twisted, I don’t know what kind of endorsement that is…) We’ve got a great community spirit here, and it’s a pleasure to be a part of it.

  4. I agree, too, these were the right decisions, in all three cases. I found the example ChatGPT feedback in Chris’s blog to be quite impressive, but, given AI is such a divisive topic, it does seem best the use of such tools for feedback be left to the individual and not be a part of the Twisted50 process.
